LOCAL UPDATE

CAMPAIGN REPORT
Local Liberal Democrat candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green John Beanse reports:
"It has been a very busy week: handing out leaflets to morning commuters at Highams Park station yesterday; 2 afternoons spent campaigning in Station Road and near schools in Woodford Green with our education leaflet; getting more literature out door to door; knocking on doors in the evenings in different parts of the constituency, etc, etc!
I also managed to attend a meeting at one of the local schools where I am a Governor. Today, I shall be campaigning in various shopping centres.
Both nationally and in our local leaflets today, the Liberal Democrat campaign turns the spotlight on HEALTH ISSUES."

LET'S STICK TO THE ISSUES PLEASE !

Speaking of the current state of the national campaigns, local Liberal Democrat candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green John Beanse said today:
"The issues facing this country are so serious that we can do without any name-calling or personal mutual insults from the 2 other major parties. All this does nothing to clarify the situation and is unedifying and unnecessary. The people of Britain must draw their own conclusions.
We shall keep on fighting a positive campaign on the important matters we continue to highlight, in order to seek a fairer, greener, safer society and a better future for this country."

FOCUS on EDUCATION

EQUIPPING OUR CHILDREN FOR LIFE
Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Charles Kennedy, and Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, Phil Willis, today guaranteed that in the core subjects of English, Maths, Science, Modern Languages and Information and Communications Technology, all secondary school children will be taught by suitably qualified teachers.

The Liberal Democrats will allocate £230 million over the next Parliament to give additional training to 44,000 teachers in these core subjects.

Currently:
Almost half a million lessons in core subjects are taught by non-specialist teachers;
44,000 teachers who are taking classes are not specialists in that core subject;
1 in 4 Maths teachers have no Maths qualification beyond A-level.

Local Liberal Democrat candidate John Beanse comments: "Equipping our children for life is a vital function of education and this requires suitably qualified teachers."

TUESDAY REPORT

Local Liberal candidate John Beanse reports:
"This morning I joined Mark Gayler (Lib.Dem.candidate for Ilford North) for an interesting and informative visit to Drugsline-Chabad - a centre which "operates at the forefront of the battle against the misuse of drugs and alcohol". The centre is just outside the constituency - in Redbridge, at Gants Hill - but operates across London.
Drugsline-Chabad "provides a comprehensive range of drug and alcohol awareness education" - including visits to schools - and offers "free, impartial advice for anybody with a dependency problem".

A VITAL MATTER

AN ISSUE WE CANNOT - AND MUST NOT - IGNORE: IRAQ
Today the Liberal Democrat campaign turns the spotlight on IRAQ.
Local candidate John Beanse says:
"This is an absolutely vital issue. Never again must this country be taken into war on a false prospectus. The Conservatives were the cheerleaders for this war - led at the time by our own local Tory MP. What will Labour or the Tories do next if they are returned to power? IT IS TIME TO HOLD BOTH LABOUR AND THE CONSERVATIVES TO ACCOUNT ON THIS ISSUE. It was the Liberal Democrats that opposed military action and were united in voting against the war. May 5th is your chance to have your say on this matter."

WEEKEND REPORTS

REPORT-BACK
Reflecting on Saturday's events, John Beanse reports:
"Yesterday morning was spent handing out leaflets and talking to shoppers at Chingford Mount and George Lane, South Woodford. Our loudspeaker car toured the constituency, hammering our key messages of standing for FAIRNESS, FREEDOM and TRUST and that the Liberal Democrats are The REAL Alternative in this election.
In the evening, I joined 3 of the other candidates at the hustings meeting at All Saints, Woodford Wells - and I thank the church for organising this public debate.

TIME FOR CONVICTION
Local Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green John Beanse this week has drawn attention to an "Independent on Sunday" opinion poll, which asked how people would vote "if they thought that the Liberal Democrats could win in their constituency".
The results came out: Lib.Dem. 37%; Lab. 28%; and Conservative 26%.

John Beanse commented:
"This is a really revealing result which is encouraging for the Liberal Democrats - but it also underlines yet again the fact that if all the people who would vote Liberal Democrat if they thought they could win actually did so, we WOULD win!
Under our antiquated and frequently unjust voting system, far too many people end up voting for one party because they want to keep "the other lot" out. I urge people in this election to have the courage of their convictions and, if they would like to support the Liberal Democrats, to vote poisitively for what they really believe in."

FRIDAY REPORT

John Beanse reports: "Yesterday, I addressed a large audience of pupils (mainly Year 10) at Highams Park School and received many very good, searching questions."
In the national campaign, the theme for the day was a better deal for women:
SOME of the KEY LIb.Dem. POLICIES FOR WOMEN
* a Maternity Income Guarantee of £170 per week for the first 6 months after the birth of their first child
* EQUAL PENSIONS for women: a pension for all women in their own right (irrespective of contributions) with £100 more per month for the over 75s - a million pensions off means-testing
* Free Personal Care for elderly and disabled people
* Childcare - reduce class sizes and create 3500 Children's Centres

AXE THE TAX

FOCUS ON THE COUNCIL TAX
The focus of yesterday's Liberal Democrat campaign was the Council Tax and the Liberal Democrat pledge to abolish it - replacing it with a Local Income Tax, based on people's ability to pay. Chingford & Woodford Green Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate John Beanse said:
"The Council Tax has become a real burden - particularly for many families, including young families, and for pensioners.
We are open about the fact that higher earners (household income around £40,000+ p.a.) would pay more, but a Local Income Tax would mean that around 75% of people would be no worse off - or better off.
Many pensioners would be lifted out of paying local taxes altogether - a fair way of in effect increasing their disposable incomes, thus boosting the real value of their pensions and giving them a fairer deal - after perhaps a lifetime of paying taxes. Struggling families would benefit too. The calculation is that the average family would be around £450 per year better off.
This policy is stimulating much debate; we do need a much fairer system."

CANDIDATE SPEAKS OUT ON IRAQ

REMEMBER IRAQ !
John Beanse, Liberal Democrat candidate in Chingford & Woodford Green, has been a persistent critic of Labour and Tory policies on Iraq. He comments:
"Many people feel they were misled over Iraq. We were told it was all about Weapons of Mass Destruction and that Britain was threatened. In the end, no such weapons were found.
Tagging along behind the USA, Britain ignored world opinion and the UN and was dragged into a war that may well have been illegal. There was widespread destruction and thousands of lives were lost.
NEVER AGAIN must this country be taken into war on a false prospectus."

LAW & ORDER

TOWARDS A SAFER SOCIETY
The focus of today's Liberal Democrat campaign is Law & Order
MORE POLICE - LESS CRIME
Charles Kennedy’s Liberal Democrats are calling for an extra 10,000 bobbies on the beat across the UK to fight crime.
The key policies include:
● Scrapping the Government’s proposals for compulsory ID cards and spending the money on recruiting 10,000 more Police Officers and 20,000 more Community Support Officers
● A massive investment in technology to help officers spend more time out on the street
● A National Border Force
● A National Police Agency to fight national & international crime
Ø It is no good protesting that “prison works” when it so often does not and we have such high rates of re-offending when prisoners are released. Liberal Democrats have been prepared to take the really tough decisions and talk about what measures are effective, not what might seem most immediately popular with the understandably concerned public!
Ø Whilst Labour and the Tories try to outbid each other in trying to sound “tough”, the Liberal Democrats have a vital role to play in standing up for our rights and freedoms and protecting our civil liberties

FOCUS on the ENVIRONMENT

THE GREEN AGENDA!
Green issues were the focus of yesterday's Liberal Democrat campaign.

Key policies include:

* Tackling climate change - cleaner energy, cleaner transport and a cleaner environment

* Tackling waste and promoting more recycling

* Rewarding owners of less polluting cars with lower taxes

* Promoting walking & cycling

[and there is much more in our manifesto]

WE NEED TO PUT THE ENVIRONMENT AT THE HEART OF GOVERNMENT POLICY.

INTO BATTLE !

LONDON RALLY

Liberal Democrat candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green, John Beanse reports on Sunday's activities:
"On Sunday 10th April, I attended the rally for Liberal Democrat candidates in London. There was a an upbeat mood of optimism about the coming General Election, as we listened to speeches from SHIRLEY WILLIAMS, MENZIES CAMPBELL and Liberal Democrat leader, CHARLES KENNEDY.
After the rally, the Liberal Democrat yellow battle-bus was unveiled outside the hall (in Smith Square). In party colurs with a large white bird of liberty (the party symbol), the bus has "Liberal Democrats - the realalternative.org" [the party's website] in large black letters along each side. It is destined to clock up a good few miles over the next few weeks!
The battle for votes has now really begun!!"

EQUIPPING CHILDREN FOR LIFE

The focus of yesterday's Liberal Democrat campaign was the important issue of EDUCATION.
Liberal Democrats are ambitious for every child.

Key education priorities include:
Ø Giving children a flying start in life by helping their mothers with increased maternity pay
Ø Reducing class sizes in infant & junior schools, to give teachers more time with each child
Ø Cutting back on tests, teachers’ paper-work and statistics in schools
Ø Scrapping all student tuition fees, so that nobody is deterred from going to university by the fear of debt

Note: Local Liberal Democrat challenger John Beanse worked for many years in comprehensive schools, where he was at various times Head of House, Head of Sixth Form, Head of Dept. (Modern Languages); he is currently an examiner & tutor. He is also a governor of 2 local schools.

HOPE, NOT FEARS !

A POSITIVE VOICE FOR BRITAIN
Launching the Liberal Democrats' General Election campaign, Charles Kennedy stressed the importance of a positive vision of a fairer Britain.
He said: " We are not going to spend the next few weeks talking Britain down.
We will be addressing people's hopes, not playing up people's fears."

LIB.DEM.LEADER CHARLES KENNEDY HAS LAUNCHED THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATS' GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN FOR MAY 5th.
Posted by Hello

MAY 5th IS POLLING DAY!

A VITAL DECISION FOR BRITAIN

Speaking after the announcement of the General Election for May 5th, John Beanse, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green said:
“The British people now have a vital decision to make.
The Liberal Democrats are seeking to take us on to a new agenda of hope, restoring trust in government and working for a fairer, greener, more democratic and safer society.
Our policies surely deserve careful consideration; I hope people will have the courage of their convictions and vote positively for a fresh start for Britain.”

THE FARCE IS OVER!

John Beanse, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green commented on the absurdity of the British way of doing things:
“So now it’s official at last – the farce of the past weeks and months is over.
Why on earth can’t we have fixed term parliaments in Britain as many other countries do?
After all, we know when other elections (local, European, etc) will take place.
But we still have to wait for the Prime Minister to be driven to the palace – TO FIX A DATE OF HIS CHOOSING – before the British people can be sure when there will be a General Election!
We need to bring our political system into the 21st century!"

GREEN ISSUES

WORKING FOR A GREENER BRITAIN

Liberal Democrats believe that there should be a green backbone right through Government.
OUR PRIORITIES INCLUDE:
Ø Faster action on climate change
Ø Cutting traffic congestion
Ø Giving proper support to alternative fuels
Ø Cutting emissions from aviation by rejecting Labour’s flawed plans for airport expansion
Ø Gradually phasing out nuclear power stations
Ø Ensuring that at least 20% of the UK’s electricity comes from a range of renewable resources by 2020

THE IDS CHALLENGE !

CHALLENGE TO LOCAL MP -
HOW ABOUT AN APOLOGY ?
John Beanse, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate in Chingford & Woodford Green, has been a persistent critic of Government policy on IRAQ
(see also photo of vigil below).
It has been accepted officially that there were no Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq.
Many people feel they were misled by the Labour government in the lead-up to war. There have been calls for Tony Blair to give a proper apology.
But who was it that was urging this country to go to war – long before any dossier, dodgy or otherwise?
Who said --- ?:
“Those who seek evidence in support of military action will find there is plenty of it” and
“Anybody who believes that Iraq lacks the ability to strike or denies that this capability is growing is deliberately ignoring the evidence”
These were the words of local MP, Iain Duncan Smith, then Leader of the Opposition.
The present leader, Michael Howard, has talked a lot about his new buzz-word “accountability”; so will a Tory leader, past or present, now accept responsibility on this issue and apologise to the British people?

Speaking at the Liberal Democrat Conference, John Beanse issues a challenge to Iain Duncan Smith to make an apology about his stance on IRAQ.

Lib.Dem. campaign to slow down traffic in the top half of Oak Hill, Woodford Green
Posted by Hello

The Liberal Democrat challenge!
Posted by Hello

PROGRESS!

John Beanse, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green, has welcomed the fact that Council officers have responded to Liberal Democrats’ requests on several local issues.
For instance:
Ø
A consultation has been taking place with local traders about the double yellow lines along Sewardstone Road parade, Chingford, which have been deterring possible passing trade
Ø
Re-planting has been done at the Good Memorial Gardens (corner of Priory Avenue, near Chingford Old Church)
Ø
Sign-boards have been put up on lamp-posts at the top of Oak Hill, Woodford Green, as requested, in an important attempt to slow down traffic
John Beanse commented: “It’s good to see progress on matters of concern to local people. We are pleased to see action.”

“LET’S GET DOWN TO THE REAL ISSUES”

Speaking of the expected General Election, John Beanse, Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Chingford & Woodford Green, said;
The Conservatives are picking on opportunistic issues designed to shore up their core vote, such as immigration, asylum, gypsies.
What Britain needs is a debate about promoting greater trust in government and improving our society.
Health, education, how we treat elderly people, putting the environment at the heart of policy, working towards a fairer society – these are some of the key issues that I want to see on the agenda.
Britain deserves better than tit-for-tat squabbling between the two major parties.
This election will give people a real chance to go for a new agenda.
