VICTORY FOR LOCAL RESIDENTS

COURT REJECTS REGAL APPEALS
The sustained eight month “Regal” campaign of the Highams Park Residents’ Association had a very successful outcome on Friday, March 10th.
An all-day hearing at Waltham Forest Magistrates’ Court saw two Regal Social Club appeals against decisions of the Council’s Licensing Panel dismissed outright, and one other previous condition changed just a bit. The Magistrates decided:
1. Not to agree the original hours application - which would have allowed opening until 3.00am on Friday mornings and 6.00am on Saturdays and Sundays, plus 30 minutes drinking-up time each day
2. Not to agree admittance beyond 2.00am of Club customers
3. To require Club management to attend quarterly meetings arranged by the Residents’ Association and Highams Park Forum (instead of the Regal making the arrangements) - in order to hear any residents’ concerns
Residents will be pleased that the attempt to open all through the night twice a week has been refused.

MING CAMPBELL'S SPEECH

THE NEW LEADER IN HARROGATE, MARCH, '06
Ming Campbell MP began his leadership by saying the Liberal Democrats have “many dazzling achievements still to come.” In his speech closing the Spring Conference, he said the country needed a distinct liberal democratic party and that politics under New Labour had become “managerial, not inspirational.” He also endorsed the findings of the Power Inquiry saying that we needed “a shift away from the executive back to Parliament, and from central to local government.” He said we need to wage a war on poverty and to protect civil liberties from the illiberal laws of the Labour government“. “Our alternative is clear,” he said, “a greener, fairer, decentralised and democratic Britain – a Britain at peace with itself at home and admired abroad.”

Local Lib.Dems. at Harrogate

SUCCESSFUL PARTY CONFERENCE
Local Liberal Democrats John Beanse and Geoff Seeff (Chingford & Woodford Green delegates) were at Harrogate from Friday to Sunday [3rd-5th March] for the successful Liberal Democrat Spring Conference which saw Sir Menzies Campbell MP make his first speech as the newly elected party leader.
John Beanse spoke at the session on "Regenerating our Communities" and stressed that there were many important aspects to this - the quality of buildings and the shops available in the shopping parades, yes, but many other issues, such as:
school places; recreation facilities; open, green spaces; combatting graffiti and vandalism; preserving heritage; integrated public transport services (including ease of getting to the local hospital for instance!); availability of doctors and dentists, etc, etc.
There was a lively debate at this lengthy session.
John Beanse said: "The Conference was so well attended that there was standing room only at 3 of the 6 fringe events I attended - and at another, I could not even get through the door. There was a positive mood of determination and optimism for the future."
