THE GOOD NEWS STORY !

MEMORIAL STONE IN PLACE
at the GOOD MEMORIAL GARDENS, corner of Priory Avenue, junction Old Church Road, E4
Local Liberal Democrats are pleased to report that the Council’s Conservation Officer has arranged for a memorial stone by the steps up to the Good Memorial Gardens and that the stone is now in place.
The Liberal Democrats had taken up the issue when discovering that these gardens (which needed attention at the time) - situated below the Old Church - were originally known as the “Good Memorial Gardens”. Requests for information in FOCUS newsletters and contacts with Vestry House museum brought the desired results to solve the mystery of the name. Chingford & Woodford Green Lib.Dems.’ Chairman John Beanse also had contacts with a surviving member of the family who lives in Devon and has kept her informed of developments throughout.
The inscription reads:

GOOD MEMORIAL GARDEN Presented to Chingford Urban District Council by the sons of Mr.Thomas Good on the death of their father in 1932.

(The Council tree logo appears on the lower part of the stone). There is now also quite a clear view across the gardens up to the Old Church (see photo below).
John Beanse said: “It is very pleasing to see the Council’s response on this issue and for our heritage to be preserved and respected in this way. Many thanks are due to the Council's Conservation Officer and also to those who provided last year the necessary information we were looking for.”
