A better deal needed for elderly people

INDEPENDENT REPORT HIGHLIGHTS SUCCESS OF FREE PERSONAL CARE IN SCOTLAND - WHY NOT IN ENGLAND?

According to an independent report published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Scotland’s policy of providing free personal care for the elderly has created a fairer system without undue extra public spending. Report co-author Alison Bowes said free personal care "has promoted more 'joined up' approaches to the care of older people" and "has helped improve the quality of life for frail, older people and improve and support their choice of care services."
[Liberal Democrats form part of the Scottish Executive coalition and played a key role in the introduction of this measure].
Local Liberal Democrat spokesman John Beanse (who was the party's Parliamentary candidate in Chingford & Woodford Green in 2005 and is currently C & WG LibDem Chairman) said:
"This research confirms what everyone already knows - free personal care is the fairest way to look after our nation's elderly. The Liberal Democrats recognise the need for a simple effective system to care for everyone. Those towards the end of their lives deserve the best possible care. It is high time that this policy - which formed part of the LibDem General Election manifesto last year - was on the Government's agenda for England."
