Highams Park

Parking Problems

Many who replied to our FOCUS Local Residents’ Survey stressed the problems in Highams Park streets. Many rail commuters, rather than using the Larkshall Road car-park (where they do not want to pay the charges, or worry about the vehicle’s safety while they are away), are clogging local streets with their cars - to the frustration of local residents. The situation is described by various residents as "a nuisance"; "horrific"; "a complete nightmare". However, opinions vary:
* "There should definitely be a parking restriction living so close to the station."
* "I would strongly oppose parking restrictions - -"
* "much opposed to any CPZ, just a money-making scheme - -" [CPZ - Controlled Parking Zone]
* "Please give us permit parking now - -"
Some people believe that where sections of a road are in favour of restrictions, the Council should agree to that, instead of going by the vote of the whole road, since those further away from the station are perhaps less likely to want a scheme. Many would like a fresh consultation with this in mind. Local Lib.Dems. will report the various views to the Council.

Comments:

The Guardian 29th March 2007

"Future of council car parks up for debate".

Liberal Democrat Councillor Bob Belham was quoted as saying:

"We have to ask the question as to whether we need these commuter car parks in the borough and whether the land on which they stand could be put to a better and more sustainable use."

The plot was obvious - put up the Car Park Fees until no one parks there and then sell or let the land for development.

One problem is that many of those parkers wanted to use the shops and now we have a run down shopping area.
