TESCO - Public Inquiry to be held
The Highams Park TESCO saga !
Background: Tesco want to build a big store off Larkshall Road, Highams Park. The first application was refused by the Council; the second was called in by the Mayor of London, then accepted. Now the Secretary of State, Ruth Kelly has called for a Public Inquiry on this controversial issue.
Right from the outset of this saga, the local Liberal Democrat Focus Team has consulted local residents and sought to reflect their views in the representations we have made.There is a sharp difference of opinion between some who would welcome the extra shopping opportunities that Tesco might provide and others who oppose the development.
There are several local concerns, which we share, about implications for traffic, environmental issues and the need to support local traders and sustain a viable shopping centre at Highams Park.
In the circumstances, we welcome the prospect of a Public Inquiry, so that all these issues can receive due consideration and local people can have their views properly heard.
