Let's recycle more !

The green agenda
The risks to our planet from global warming and climate change cannot be ignored. Not only this country will suffer if things go unchecked; the consequences could be catasrophic in other parts of the world.
We cannot continue to have a cavalier attitude to household waste. Landfill and incineration are not the best options. Too much is being thrown into wheelie-bins which could in fact be recycled. We can all make a green contribution.
Local Lib Dems in Waltham Forest are campaigning to urge people to make greater use of the black box, or the brown bin for garden and some kitchen waste.
THE BLACK BOX CHECK-LIST: The following items belong in the black box and not the wheelie-bin:
Yellow pages; paper; aluminium foil; cardboard (flattened); textiles; shoes; household batteries; metal food and drinks cans (rinsed); plastic bottles (in some areas); car batteries; engine oil (sealed container) - all in separate bags where possible.
LET'S ALL GET GREENER !

Comments:
Unfortunately its not so simple, recycling is not always the best option, it can use more energy and resources than creating from new.

The mantra of recycling could even be doing harm.

Firstly we should be reusing wherever possible. Bottles and jars should be reused, shops should take them back to be collected by the producer if you have no use for them at home.
People already reuse lots of plastic bags as rubbish bags, and some of us reuse them for shopping (when we remember).

Incineration is also a good option in many cases, it can be clean and produces electricity rather than using it, even landfill can be a best option.

The mantra of 'recycle, recycle, recycle' is woefully simplistic and offers little solution to our problems. Recycling should be seen as a part of a much broader waste management system.

A side note: it is now illegal to throw away batteries, they need to be disposed of carefully.
