Recycling progress in Waltham Forest

GETTING GREENER
The results coming from the recycling pilot area which includes parts of South Chingford, Highams Park and Woodford Green, continue to be very encouraging. The participation rate has increased from 38% to over 97% since the pilot started. The amounts recycled have gone up dramatically - a rise of over 40% since August. '06 - and there has been a large decrease of about 20 tonnes in domestic refuse. In a Council survey, 99% said they recycled because it is good for the environment [only 1% because they did not want to be fined]. 97% thought the recycling drive is a good idea.

Comments:
Despite the recent announcement by LBWF that recycling for most is now a requirement I have to say I'm extremely disappointed in the operation of the service by the new contractors of late. I live in the borders of Highams Park / Woodford Green and have had, up until the last few months, an excellent reliable collection. This has changed unfortunately. I currently have a over spilling bin because for the past two weeks I've had no collection. Neither has my neighbour I might add. although the recycling truck has been seen in the street, they've just not bothered to pick ours up. The bins are in the same places they've always been, adjacent to our front paths and clearly visible. After the missed collection on Monday last, I rang Waltham Forest Direct and reported this,I rang again on Wednesday to be advised that the recycling contractors had until midnight that day to collect. If not it would be passed to a supervisor to deal with. Needless to say they were not collected, nor have they been.It will be three weeks tomorrow (monday)and they are due to collect then.....Will they though? The Recycling Department needs to get organised and carry out the duties they are charged with on a regular basis before the Council spends more of their resources telling the community how they must dispose of their refuse in order to comply with the law.
